724 Games ago he had hair...Cavs win 107-90

On throwback night - honoring the 1988-89 Cavaliers - the Cavs dressed up like members of an 80s hairband for the pregame intros, for some reason.  Zydrunas Ilgauskas, looking more like Marilyn Manson, entered the game in the first quarter, and set the all-time mark for games played as a Cavalier.  Congrats to Big Z, 14 points 6 rebounds on the night.

70smo 9

No Cavaliers scored more than 14, 7 got into double figures, and the defense held the Suns to 90 points.  Great effort all around. Now back to the pictures.  LeBron looks kinda scary.

70smo 7

Andy looked like he needed an undershirt.

70smo

Mo Williams looked kinda like he could have been an 80s rocker.

70smo 6

Parker looked smooth, despite the wearing women's sunglasses.  He shot it well again tonight too, 10 points on 4 of 7 shooting.

70smo 8

Shaq, while disappointing in the pregame picture (jersey and shark teeth?) did not disappoint in the actual game.  He completely dominated the Suns in the early going, forced them out of their man to man, and it was a free-for-all from the perimeter from there, shooting over a Phoenix zone that would have made Jim Boeheim physically ill.

70smo 3

Coby Karl did not get in, but made one helluva an appearance in the pregame, as you can see.

70smo 1

Boobie looks more like Bobby Brown, and played well tonight.  Nice 'high hand-off' to LBJ in the 3rd.

Cavs move to 13-5.

Mike Brown, Shaq, and the Suns

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

Is it possible Mike Brown just didn't feel like having a party the other night?

Sure, he didn't need to do Z like that, but before we press onto the Phoenix Suns tonight at the Q, lets look at the possible Mavericks pregame thought process from Coach Brown's perspective:

1. His team was just embarrassed by the Charlotte Bobcats.
2. The Cavaliers were 11-5 after (16) with an 'improved roster' this season.
3. The Cavs were 13-3 last year.
4. Opponents FG% is up this year as opposed to last.
5. Opponents PPG is up this year as opposed to last.
6. Prior to Saturday, Shaq didn't look like he was meshing all that well in the rotation.
7. Prior to Saturday, Delonte was kinda like a major elephant in the room type problem.

Oh and by the way, Z - the guy chose not to play - hasn't really done much this year to prove that he can contribute.  Sorry.  So you're Mike Brown, and you don't feel like throwing a party in the beginning of a game you had to have.  Can't say I blame the Coach for that.  And if the players wanted to give Z his do Saturday, well maybe they shouldn't have all 'not shown up' against Charlotte on Friday.  If that had happened, maybe then they're coach would have been in a more festive mood on Saturday.

Suns - Cavs Preview...Motivation for Shaq?

An Ode To Z

Written by Bill Nagel on .

Predicting the Miracle at Lake Placid or Buster Douglas knocking out Iron Mike would have certainly been easier than pegging Zydrunas Ilgauskas as the guy that would eventually play more games than any other Cav in the history of the franchise.  However, he hasn't, not yet at least.  Of course the national media is now taking off on Lebron's comments regarding the Z-DNP situation and more specifically, his stating that Z's individual award was more important than the Cavs vs the Mavericks.  But what shouldn't be lost in this story about DNP's, and wins versus records, is what Z's meant to this team, and the community that supports it.  No this is not Cal Ripken surpassing Gehrig but it's an individual triumph that should most definitely be given it's day in the sun.

Delonte, my little cousin, and LeBron on Z

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

There are a lot of reasons why Delonte West is cool.  Not the least of which is the fact that he took a minute to take a picture with my little cousin this past weekend during a Black Friday shopping trip to Best Buy.  Appreciate that D-West!

danny and delonte

Speaking of cool, LeBron James let it be known that he wasn't cool with Mike Brown's decision to give Z a DNP on the night he was scheduled to break Danny Ferry's record for games played on Saturday.  Conspiracy theories abound as to whether this was a directive coming from Ferry himself in an attempt to preserve his record.  Just kidding.

LeBron's quotes are below - via the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Mary Schmitt Boyer:

"Me personally, I definitely thought he should have played. I'm not trying to stir up anything with coach or the organization. I don't know who made the call. But sometimes one game is a smaller thing. What was on the line the day before yesterday was way bigger than us playing the Mavericks, and that was Z breaking the record to become the franchise leader in games played.  I stand behind Z and whatever Z feels at this point in time, I definitely -- if I was in control of it -- would have put him in, probably would have started him. You could have easily started him and subbed him right out and had the standing ovation from the fans with a timeout. If you didn't want to play him, there were a lot of ways for that accomplishment to be accomplished...As a friend of his, I was very upset, and I know he was also."

Delonte Creates Another Problem for Cavaliers

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

This time its a good one.  Coming into Saturday night's game with the Mavericks, Delonte West had appeared in 8 games this season, and in those games he wasn't really all that productive.  West had totaled 11 turnovers in 17 mpg of action, while averaging 4.2 points, 2.3 assists during those appearances. Against Dallas, Delonte didn't turn it over at all, and was a huge spark off the bench while scoring 10 points, dishing out 10 assists, and grabbing 4 rebounds in 28 minutes of playing time.  Put simply, if he keeps this up, the Cavaliers are going to be a very good team.

That said, the issue that arises - albeit a good one - for Mike Brown is minutes.  Specifically, if more playing time is to come for West, they will be at the expense of Daniel Gibson, who hasn't done all that much this season to 'lose' playing time.  Daniel's issues in season's past have been his consistency; he's shown up beyond huge at times, and at other times he hasn't shown up at all.  However, thus far this season, Boobie has demonstrated the ability to be a legit weapon off the bench, who can be counted on nightly.

Optimus Prime and the King

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

LeBron James made an on-court statement in the early goings of the Cavaliers' win over the Mavericks last night.  That being,  just give me a few games, I'll get the Big Fella incorporated into the attack.  Right after Shaq backed the 'hair-patch-less' Drew Gooden in for an easy two to start the game, Mo Williams found LeBron inside, who then found Shaquille O'Neal cutting from the free throw line, to the basket, for a thunderous two.  Austin Carr found the play...exciting.

AC on the call:

"LeBron James catches Optimus Prime, and he throoowss the hammmmer down!"

Two things I thought there:

1. Optimus Prime, I like that one.  Didn't have it on our list of Shaq's nicknames.  Do now, that's 31.

2. When Shaq gets a head of steam towards the basket...holy ----!

Minutes later, after a LeBron James fadeaway fell short, Shaq grabbed the board, and then hit James in stride cutting from the top of the key, who banged home a thunderous slam of his own.  To which AC responded:

"And Shaq returns the favvoorrr to the Kiinngg, and the throoowsss the hammmer down!"

We would have had one more comment from Carr on this subject if Jeff Phelps wasn't giving an in-game update on Zydrunas Ilgauskas coming out of a timeout later in the quarter.  Right out of that stoppage of play, LBJ threw another lob to Shaquille, who not so politely deposited it threw the iron for two.

Cavaliers Beat Up On Mavericks, 111-95

Written by Glenn Moore on .

The Cleveland Cavaliers dominated from the start and never looked back as they thump the streaking Dallas Mavericks, 111-95 at Quicken Loans Arena Saturday night. The Mavericks (12-5) entered the contest winning nine of their last eleven ball games and have beat the defending champion L.A. Lakers at Los Angeles earlier in the year. But the Cavaliers (12-5) looked to shake their lackadaisical performance against the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday night. And they did just that.

Getty ImageMO WILLIAMS and LeBRON JAMES lead all scorers with 25 points, including Williams going a perfect 7 for 7 from 3 point range. ANDERSON VAREJAO and JAMARIO MOON provided sparks off the bench, combining for 28 points and 18 rebounds. But the most important stat of the night was the 10 assists by DELONTE WEST, who also chipped in 10 points off the bench. West played the way he performed last year and his ability to penetrate to the basket, opened up slashing teammates for easy baskets. As a whole, the Cavaliers had 33 assists.

Dallas were lead by DIRK NOWITZKI, who had 27 points to go with his 9 rebounds and JASON TERRY kept the game close with 25 points off the bench on 5 3 pointers.

Mark Cuban: Dan Gilbert is cooler than you

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

The Cavaliers lost to the Bobcats 94-87 last night and the game was awful for an assortment of reasons.   I hope they learn from it tonight when they tip off against the Mavericks at the Q.  But I also hope the Cavaliers aren't the only people in learning mode tonight.  Here's hoping that Mark Cuban can learn a lesson in coolness, class, and controlled rage from his Cavalier counterpart, Dan Gilbert.

Cuban has the habit of making his ire for officials known by screaming at them all game long - while rocking a Dirk Nowitzki football Mavericks jersey, from as close to the court as the NBA will allow him to be - but Dan Gilbert takes another approach.  When Gilbert feels the need to take a swipe at the officials, he just hops on the television broadcast, and rips the them both in general, and in the game he's watching specifically, for as long as he wants to.  All the while joking about the possible fines that may emerge from his commentary.

Case in point, when Dan Gilbert joined the telecast of the Cavaliers-Pistons game on Wednesday, he offered up gems like this:

"Anybody who says that LeBron James is getting superstar calls in this league, strong no.  That's an absurdity, its the exact and total opposite, and everybody knows it in Cleveland."

And also calculated an in-game tally at one point of fines he had probably racked up by then; estimating the damage to be at about 250K.

Below is a full transcript of Gilbert's commentary on the officials:
