Cavs Take Care Of Business In Atlanta, Beat Hawks, 95-84

Written by Glenn Moore on .

The Cavaliers held the Atlanta Hawks scoreless for almost nine minutes on route to a 95 – 84 win last night in Atlanta. The sellout crowd of 20,150 in attendance set a new Philips Arena regular-season record, generating a playoff-like atmosphere. Too bad they couldn’t help the Hawks put the ball in the basket.

Hawks vs. CavaliersLeBron James, despite being booed every time he touched the ball, notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists. Mo Williams and Delonte West led the Cavaliers (25-8) coming off the bench, combining for 37 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Williams did have seven turnovers though in what Cavs coach Mike Brown called “an ugly win” for Cleveland.

“It was an ugly game, but you have to win ugly games. Defensively, in the second half, we were pretty good,” Coach Brown said. “Atlanta has been averaging over 100 points in this building and having their way with teams. So we’re happy about the way we handled them defensively tonight.”

Cleveland has held three straight opponents fewer than 90 points and also improved their record against teams over .500 to 15-3. Zydrunas Ilgauskas added 15 points off the bench for the Cavaliers, including a dramatic trey to put away the Hawks late in the fourth quarter.

The Cavaliers led 75-74 entering the final quarter and stretched the lead to 85-74 before Josh Smith finally ended the Hawks’ drought that lasted 8:48 by scoring with 3:12 remaining. The Hawks (21-9) were 0 for 10 from the field in the period before the basket.

Jamal Crawford led the Hawks with 26 points off the bench on 10 of 17 shooting from the field, including four 3 pointers. Joe Johnson, who averages 21.4 points, made only 5 of 14 shots from the field and scored only four points after his 11 point first quarter.

Both teams head north to Cleveland where they will face off again tonight. Cleveland gets a couple days off to celebrate the New Year before flying to New Jersey.

Notes: Ilgauskas passed Brad Daugherty for No. 2 on the Cavaliers all-time scoring mark during the game and now has 10,405 career points

Recapping a 25-point W, and an old Delonte story

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

If its true that losing builds character, its also true that manhandling the best team in the NBA, on Christmas day, at their place, with the NBA-world watching, builds confidence.  Sunday night in Cleveland that confidence was on display by way of a 108-83 beat down of  the Houston Rockets, and it appears the floodgates are officially open.  You might have worried about a let-down after traveling home from a west coast trip punctuated by the win against the Lakers, but if you did, you should have stopped worrying after Mo Williams ended the first half with a three that put the Cavs up 51-48, because they wouldn't look back.  Defense was the order of the day in the second half, as the Cavaliers held Houston to 35 points in the second half, and you gotta think the new Cavaliers have adjusted completely to the way Mike Brown wants to play on that end of the floor at this point.  LeBron only needed 30 minutes of action to post a line that read 29-5-6, and Mo Williams - who should be an All Star again - added 20-6-5.  What you also had to like on Sunday was Shaq's ability to find people out of the double team.  He left a sweet bounce pass in the middle of the lane for LeBron to finish on one series, and found Mo Williams for a jumper the time before.  If he can continue to be effective passing out of the double team, look out.  Additionally, if Z can continue to stretch the defense with these jump shots he got for Christmas, he can not only extend his career maybe five more years - a la Danny Ferry with the Spurs - but he can add a potent dimension to this offense by forcing the opposing big people to step out and respect that shot going forward.  Z went for 12 points and 5 rebounds on the game, and to go along with 4 assists, Shaquille added 13 points, 11 rebounds, and a breakaway dunk that had me hoping he go back down the floor like he did for the Lakers in that one Finals game.  But he played it cool, respect.  Aaron Brooks was the only factor for the Rockets tonight, going for 23 points, but the PG only had 3 assists as none of his teammates really got involved (the next highest Houston scorers were Ariza and Landry with 11).  Next up for the Cavaliers (23-9) is a trip to Atlanta (21-8) to take on a very solid Hawks' squad on Tuesday, should be a good test.  Here's hoping they can keep this momentum moving.

And lastly, after the jump, a quick follow up on the first preseason game Delonte West story by way of an article Scene Magazine's Vince Grzegorek ran in early November, as well as a piece Brian Windhorst wrote yesterday in the Plain Delear.

Serving 3's overseas: Damon Jones

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

We will be running a new regular series of posts going forward into the new year titled Hooping on Foreign Hardwoods, which is designed to give you a quick update on the overseas careers of former Cleveland basketball players.  I say 'Cleveland' because while we will update you on former Cavaliers, our updates could also include a player that is in some way connected to the Cavaliers, or the Cleveland area.

Hooping on Foreign Hardwoods: Damon Jones

We start today with a guy that used to serve 3's on a platter during his days with the Cavs, and all joking aside, he did hit a couple big shots while he was here too.  Nowadays, he's currently serving those threes with a side of linguini.

 1256139462004_jones00011

Playing this season in Italy for Martos Napoli, Damon Jones has appeared in all 9 games this season starting in mid-October.  He is currently averaging 13.3 points in 36 minutes of action per game, along with just over 2.5 rebounds and assists respectivey.  His high game to date was on November 28th where he totaled 22 points on 6 of 10 shooting from 3 point land.  In his most recent game against Banca Tercas (12-20) he scored 18 points, on 4 of 16 shooting from beyond the arc.  So he's getting his shot off.  But if I was the best shooter in the universe, and I traveled all the way to Italy, I think 16 three point attempts in a game would be only fitting.  Keep shooting Damon, Salud!

Merry Christmas Mamba

Written by Bill Nagel on .

Hello again Cavs fans. What a game.  A game that had all the intensity of summer hoops and all the physicality of a Sunday in the NFL.  Our Cavs rose to the occasion and catapulted themselves right back into "the discussion."  Although in my eyes they've been there all along considering we're now 8-3 vs winning squads and have wins in Orlando and in LA with a day one loss against Boston as our only blemish.  A few takes from the game:

Toughness in mind....

We were by far the tougher team mentally.  The refs let these two teams go at it and while our Cavs rolled with it, the Lakers looked like a little league pitcher crying and kicking dirt on the mound.  We saw both Kobe and Derek Fisher take unnecessary cheap shots at Mo in frustration.  We saw Phil Jackson fold his arms in protest instead of subbing in for Lamar Odom who had just gotten the heave.  The Lakerswere shook.  They were being dominated on their home floor on the biggest regular season stage and apparently weren't sure how to act.  One things certain, it wasn't the refs fault.  We were called for 3 more fouls than they were and only shot 3 more FT's, and they can thank all their T's for that.

Toughness on the court...

We got to hear numerous times from Kobe's fan club in the booth how there's 'no retreat in Kobe.'  Well there was no retreat in these road weary Cavs either.  As the game got more and more physical the Cavs embraced it.  There is no question Shaq is a true enforcer in the paint even in these elder years.  We saw him deliver a hard foul to Pau Gasol early and I can't recall any strong moves to the hoop from him thereafter.  And he definitely got into Kobe's head as he bodied him up when Kobe attacked the hoop.  And the next time Kobedrives into that brick wall, he should berate himself for forcing the big man out of LA.

On Mo....

You know your team has shifted to a tough mans game when we start seeing Mo posting up Derek Fisher.  On paper there is no way that should happen.  Another big game on a big stage and Mo delivers.  With Mo on the court without Lebron and with Kobe still on the court we took control of this game.  Mo is even better this year.

Versatility....

Some coaches would say they don't change what they do for anyone.  Mike Brown is not one of those coaches.  If you play small like Dallas, Z will ride the bench and Boobie will play some big minutes.  If you play big like LA than Boobie will earn a virtual DNP and big Z will start the 3rd quarter.  Well played coach.  It goes to show how much deeper we are than the Lakers.  One of the best 3 pt shooters in the NBAplayed just 7 seconds due to match-up issues and we didn't miss a beat.

Lebron vs Kobe...

Never materialized as the country had hoped but Lebron showed his maturity once again.  It was very clear he didn't press a thing and did as his team needed.  A very pedestrian 26 pts and 9 boards.  A career game for half the league. Although he did have a season high 7 turnovers.

Christmas Day Q and A: Cavs - Lakers

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

Don from the Lakers blog With Malice was nice enough to stop by for a Q and A in preview of the Cavaliers-Lakers game this Christmas day, and his answers to my questions are below.  For my answers to his questions, click here.  But don't just read my answers while you're there, check out Don's remix to a classical piece of holiday literature...Twas Hours Into Christmas...but first:

Stepien Rules: What does Kobe do for his team, in your opinion, that's better than what LeBron can do for his?

Don (With Malice): It's kind of like comparing a Ferrari and a Lamborghini - both are amazing... but here goes:  Unlike the Cavs/LBJ, LA has no need for Kobe to excel at rebounds/assists/defense - even tho' he does all of that to an extent.  Cleveland's roster needs LeBron James to do all of that, and a bit more.  And scoring-wise, their skillset can be broken down to the most basic level as such: one has a massive arsenal on how he can beat you (read: score), and the other has an almost unstoppable ability to get to the basket, and score.  Kobe can do that too - and has done so with incredible efficiency this season... but with LeBron's massive physique he's harder to stop in traffic.  LA don't need that either: there are plenty of other options to score with bodies all around.  For me, the thing Kobe has (at this point of their careers) over LeBron is his ability to know "when".  "When" to get his team-mates involved - and which of them, and "when" to take over.  Simply put, his leadership is better (and that's something that's grown over the last 3-4 seasons).

Stepien Rules: What's your take on how Ron-Ron's blending into the new sqad thus far?  He stopped drinking Hennesey at halftime right?

Don (With Malice)
: Ron-ron's one of the reasons LA are being hailed as the #1 defensive team in the NBA right now.  It's been a focus of LA's from the beginning of the season, and Artest's been a major part of it.  He brings a toughness that has been perceived as lacking in LA (tho' there was nothing of that last season even sans-Artest).  And ol' Ronnie plays D on most swingmen (and on LeBron better than anyone else in the game)... this leaves Kobe with more energy for the other end.  As for his ability to get in the limelight?  It's not like that's changed much (revelations... Jimmy Kimmel), but where he is now, it's taken in stride.  With Phil, Kobe et al - you can rest assured that the moment it becomes a true distraction, Ron'll have it explained to him.  And he's older.  I do believe he's far less likely to have a meltdown at the Lakers than any other team in the league.  On the boozing, Ron said it best, stating that LA's too professional for him to pull stupid stunts.  And he's too mature now.  Isn't it a sign of maturity to admit to the follies of youth?

Stepien Rules:  How has Khloe Kardashian affected team chemistry?  Or more directly, how's the Candyman doing so far this year?

Don (With Malice):
Khloe who?  Oh... Lamar's been excellent.  It takes a pretty phenomenal outlook and maturity to be a player of his talent, and be prepared to play as 6th man.  The way he is now, Lamar could be a focal point or a #2 on nearly any team in the league... yet at LA he comes off the bench, for less money than he is worth.  He's cognizant of how special this team is.

Stepien Rules:
Even though I am afraid of your answer as a Cavs' fan, are this year's Lakers better than the team that won it all last season?

Don (With Malice):  Clearly.  My reasoning falls into 6 categories...
- Defense.  Last season LA were decent defensively and damn good offensively.  This season the focus has changed.  They're good offensively, but very, very good defensively.  Which leads to...
- Ron Artest.  He's an upgrade for this team on Trevor Ariza.  That's not to denigrate what TA's done in Houston: he's been flat-out amazing... but he'd never have achieved that in LA.  At the Rockets, he can do what he can do.  In LA, he'd still be a 4th-or-5th option.  But Ron's better from 3pt land, more capable of defending bigger bodies (no-one defends LBJ like Ron... did I mention that?), and just a pitbull on defense.  Ron's simply a better fit for LA than Trevor is/was.
- Kobe.  Rather than resting on his laurels having one his 4th title, guy works his ass off over the summer on adding MORE to his already expansive game.  Want to learn how to post up?  Get "The Dream" in to teach.  Kobe's just as hungry as he was last season... maybe even more so.
- Phil Jackson.
- A healthy roster.  This is pretty much true of all rosters I guess... but look: LA were very good without Gasol early on, but what's happened since he's been back?  They've been phenomenal.  Add to the *healthy* category the presence of Andrew Bynum.  Even tho' he's in a bit of a slump at the moment, he's going to play a major part in what LA does this season.
- Gasol playing yet another season, and learning even more.  Kobe says that Gasol's the most complete big in the game today, and it's not even close.  Who am I to disagree with Kobe Bryant?

Stepien Rules:
Barring injuries, what has to go wrong for the Lakers to not make the NBA Finals? How do the Cavs beat them today?

Don (With Malice):
Barring injuries, whilst I expect LA to make the Finals, they could be stopped by another team making a trade that improves their roster significantly.  It'd take quite a bit tho'.  For the Cavs to win on Christmas Day, they'll have to get a major contribution from Shaquille O'Neal, as well as their other bigs.  LeBron will get his, as will Kobe... but there's 21 feet of "large" in LA that will need stopping for Cleveland to win.

My score prediction after the jump...

Previewing the Christmas Day slate of games

Written by Amin Vafa on .

Seasons Greetings from Stepien Rules! Here are some quick previews to read in between meals and/or while avoiding your in-laws. Enjoy!

Heat @ Knicks (12:00pm EST, ESPN)
The rivalry of the 90s is long gone, but the drama around these two teams is never dull. Both of these teams have gone through lulls and spurts through the season so far, and it looks like the Knicks are in a spurt while the Heat are in a lull right now. Another piece of drama surrounding these two teams is that they've both been touted as major landing spots for LeBron James next season, but we'll see how this season plays out first before we fumble around with all that posturing. It's the first game of the day, so let's hope this appetizer doesn't leave you with a bad taste in your mouth.

Celtics @ Magic (2:30pm, ABC)
Salad course! After the hard-fought playoff series between these two teams last year, this should be a stellar match-up. Unfortunately, Boston is going to be without Paul Pierce (he's missing a few weeks for knee irrigation, gross), so we won't really be able to put a whole lot of predicting value on this game in case of a future playoff match-up this postseason. Look for Cavs fans to hope for both teams to somehow lose this game.

Cavs @ Lakers (5:00pm, ABC)
Mmm mmm, the main course. We hope everyone enjoyed the Cavs' early Christmas presents to their fanbase on Wednesday night: a win, an overtime shutout, (3) 3-pointers by Z, and a Triple-Double by LeBron against the Kings. Now, for the rest of the Cavs' fanbase, let's hope they don't forget to give us a win against the Lakers on Friday.
This game is important for 2 reasons:
1) Because a bajillion people will be watching, and
2) It will show EVERYONE if the big Shaquisition has paid dividends against a team the Cavs really care about beating.
Look for Mike Brown to employ the ever unpopular twin-towers lineup (featuring Shaq and Z), because the Lakers are one of the only teams that require lots and lots of height to defend their guys. In case you haven't noticed, the Lakers are a damn good team. Last year, Delonte wasn't available to defend Kobe; let's hope he is this year. LeBron should spend his time defending Odom. Other than that, the Cavs should hope for some throwback games from Shaq and Z as Christmas presents this year. (Editor's note: look for a Christmas day Q and A featuring the Laker Blog With Malice later this morning here on SR)

Clippers @ Suns (8:00pm, ESPN)
Chocolate Pecan Pie! Barbosa's back, Griffin's not. Look for the Clippers' bigs to play some defense against Amare, and look for Baron Davis to make Steve Nash look like... Steve Nash. Eric Gordon will put up some big numbers tomorrow, but that'll be because Phoenix is controlling the pace of the game (and because no one will be defending Gordon). Should we a tasty wind-down to the festivities of the day.

Nuggets @ Blazers (10:30pm, ESPN)
Coffee and late-night pickin'. If you're still up on the East Coast (or West, for that matter), this game will be a nice end to your evening. The Nuggets have come down to earth a bit from their playoff performance last season, but have still been playing fantastic ball. And the Blazers have been proving to everyone that short-handed doesn't necessarily mean you're at a disadvantage. Some fine West-coast ball happening here. Look for Aldridge to continue his streak of big games, and look for Birdman to sneak in and swat a couple of his shots.

Fun fact:
One thing the NBA and ESPN may not have noticed is the fact that all 5 teams that have ever employed Shaq are playing today: Magic, Lakers, Heat, Suns, and Cavs. Weird. Big day for the big guy. We hope you enjoy it as much as he will. And let's hope he enjoys it by showing his former team how his @$$ tastes.

Mulling over Cavalier trade rumors

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

Over the last few days the names of possible Cavalier trade targets have surfaced, first reported on by Brian Windhorst.  Today, Rick has a post up on WFNY taking a closer look at those players - Anthony Randolph, Antawn Jamison, and Troy Murphy- and I recommend you click here to read his full piece on the subject.  An excerpt of Rick's summary on each rumored trade possibility is below, followed by what I'd be willing to spend in return for each player, if I was tall enough to go by the government name of Daniel John Willard Ferry.

via WFNY, Rick:

Anthony Randolph:

"Randolph is in his second year. He averages 11.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.3 blocks in just under 23 minutes per game. His PER is 17.82. (For those looking to compare, Hickson averages 7.4 points, 3.8 boards, 0.4 blocks in 19 minutes a contest. His PER is 13.7.)... He certainly doesn’t stretch the defense like the Cavs are looking for. He would be an asset on defense however..."

Antawn Jamison:

"Antawn Jamison is the old man in this group. He’s by far the most polished offensive player in this group. He averages a hair under 21 points per game and grabs 8.5 rebounds...He has been a bit banged up this season, but fights through it. In fact, he has missed a total of 30 games in the past 5 seasons for the Wizards...He is due to make $13,358,905 next season, and $15,076,715 the following year."

Troy Murphy:

"ESPN's Chad Ford said Murphy makes the most sense for the Cavs...[but] Let’s hold on a minute.  Murphy may be a good three-point shooter, and his 6′11″ frame can usually get a shot over smaller forwards, but is his defensive liabilities worth taking on his deal for next year? Maybe.  Murphy isn’t the answer to the screen and roll problem. He also isn’t going to help in transition defense...He will rebound, and he can shoot from outside the paint."

What I'd be willing to trade for each player:
