Last Stop on Nike Tour

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

Prior to the close of the Nike Tourstop this past weekend LeBron said a few words to those gathered around the court in Akron.

lbj in end - 1

I was actually standing right next to Coach Dru Joyce while LeBron spoke, and even though he was right in front of me, I wasn't really paying attention to what he was saying.  Sorry 'Bron 'Bron.  While I was standing there I couldn't help but think about a comment Coach Dru made on stage earlier in the day, about his thoughts, way back when, on this whole thing, one day playing out on the big screen.

lbj in end 2

Coach Dru Joyce:

"We really didn't realize this was gonna be a movie until these guys were about three years out of high school.  Up until then, we didn't know, at that time we were just living our lives."

More Than A Game hits theatres Akron, Cleveland, New York, and LA on October 2nd...the release to theatres nation-wide is scheduled to follow.

A Walk Through World History

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

It doesn't take a historian to tell you that there was something sorta historical about LeBron, at this stage of his career, celebrity, and social status, coming home to take a walk through the crowds of Akron kids who live in the same neighborhoods, and go to the same schools, as he once did.

Prior to making that walk from the stage to the court on Friday, Akron's Mayor Don Plusquellic spoke about the significance of the day for Akron, as well as his prediction about LeBron way back when James was only 14...

lbj takes court - 2

Don Plusquellic from MTAG Akron Tourstop:

"I've been telling mayor friends and people all over, since back when LeBron was 14, that LeBron James is the greatest basketball player to ever come out of...the world!"

That's not Ohio, United States, or North America...best player to 'come out of the world.'  And now he's the MVP. Got that mayor friends?

LeBron James at Akron Tourstop:

"This is Jimmy, he does all my tattoos."

The 'Jimmy' that took the stage with LeBron and company - pictured to the right of James - is tattoo artist Jimmy Hayden.  In addition to doing all of LBJ's ink-work, he also designed the pair of shoes that LeBron is holding in the picture above.  They're pretty cool, but whether it be in a Sunday night rec game, or with a pair of jeans, I'm just not sure I could pull those off.  I'm sure James could though.

On the origin for the design of the kicks, said Hayden:

"They were inspired by LeBron's work ethic."

Nobody Dunked on Him This Time

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

Prior to LeBron and Dru Joyce taking to the court for a shoot-around yesterday in Akron, the mc of the event, Robin Simone, in the style of old-fashioned ribbing, told Dru Joyce, that there was a kid in the crowd who said he could take him in a three point shoot-out.

Joyce said in response: "Point 'em out. They not serious.  Point 'em out."

Then Robin turned to LeBron and said:

"And there were some people out there saying they could dunk on you."

To which LeBron replied:

"Its possible, its possible.  I've been getting dunked on  a lot lately."

Chris Paul Joins LBJ On Akron's Court

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

New Orleans' Hornet Chris Paul made a cameo in Akron on Friday, joining LBJ for a shoot-around at Nike's MTAG Tourstop.

As I stood there courtside I got to thinking that it makes sense CP3 and LBJ are friends.  They have a lot in common.  They're both Nike guys, both won Rookie of the Year Awards, both are perennial All Stars, both have taken their teams to the playoffs, and both won Gold Medals this past Olympics.

And as I continued to stand there, I realized there is just about nothing that these world-class athletes have in common with me.  I touched the bottom of the bracket that attaches the rim to the backboard one time when I was 21 and considered myself an outstanding leaper for about a week.

He Put On For His City

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

When I got down to Akron for Nike's More Than a Game Tour Stop Friday, the first thing I did was pick up the credentials that were left by Nike for Brendan from Stepien Rules at the media check in desk.  After that though, nobody noticed I was even there, or remotely cared in the slightest that I made the trip.

lbj takes stage - 2

They went crazy for this guy though, and when he took the stage he threw basketballs out to the kids, reveled in a frenzied roar, and did kinda funny poses like the one below.

lbj takes stage - 3

Just before LeBron and company (Dru Joyce III, Willie McGee, and Coach Dru) took the stage, Young Jeezy's I Put On was roaring through the speakers.  And when they sat down for a Q and A, LeBron says that's exactly what he does...for Akron (oh god please don't leave Cleveland).

lbj takes stage -4

From LBJ during the Q and A:

"Everything I did, and everything I do is for the city of Akron.  The city of Akron did everything for me, and I am going to continue everyday to rep Akron, and to continue to put my city on"

MTAG Wear: Its More Than a T-Shirt

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

When the movie ended last night, a minor frenzy ensued as people who love free things started gobbling up all the extra shirts left on the empty seats that happened to be in and around my section.  Apparently you can't have too many MTAG shirts in your closet these days. A Picture of the shirt that caused the stir is below...one was enough for me by the way.

On Thursday night, the Akron Civic Theatre was home to a private screening of the Kristopher Belman film More Than A Game...you may have gathered as much by the ticket pictured above.  Nike's media department was nice enough to offer me that ticket, and I appreciate the fact that they did.  The movie exceeded my expectations, and so did the evening.  The air in Akron was filled with pride last night, and to watch this tale be told on the big screen, in the city that witnessed it first hand, was special.  And if I may play Roger Ebert for a moment: equally special is this film, it is certainly more than just a movie.

If you think that MTAG is just about inner-city hoop dreams made good, or its a LeBron James documentary, you're incorrect. This is a movie about friendship, loyalty, and dreams. Its far from basketball-centric, and I believe that anyone who watches it can relate to its message.  If you think you know everything there is to know about the LeBron James / SVSM story, this movie will show you that you don't.  And if you don't think that this movie will inspire you to some degree, it will.  I heard the guy behind me talking before the movie about how he had seen it in Chicago already and cried.  I thought to myself, I'll probably like this movie, but c'mon...no way I cry.  And then I cried...go ahead, make fun of me, I don't care.

Before the movie, director, and Akron native, Kris Belman spoke about the eight years it took him to make this movie.  I know people probably think this guy was just lucky.  Right place, right time, and there you go, now he's got a movie.  But if you didn't already think so, let me be the first to tell you that he deserves any and all credit he gets for telling this story in the real-life way in which its told.  He spoke about the offers from various movie companies, ESPN, and other production outfits, who offered him money to just sell them the footage along the way, and how tempting it was to do that.  However he didn't sell-out in the end, followed his vision, and in turn gave this story the truth in telling that it deserved.

After the movie Belman, and the cast came out for a Q & A, pictured below, from left to right, is as follows:

No idea who the first guy is, Willie McGee, Dru Joyce III, Sian Cotton, LeBron James, Coach Dru Joyce II, Kris Belman

mtag 005 2

Quotes and Notes:

In response to a question about how he handles negative press, LeBron James said the following:

"Coach Dru told me early on that if the worst thing that happens to you in your life is that someone in the media says something negative about you, than you've had a pretty good life.  That is something that I have always believed in ever since a young age, and that is how I handle it.  Like when people in the media want to talk about how I didn't shake hands (laughingly) I just don't let it bother me."

In response to a question about new friendships he has made in the NBA, LeBron James said the following:

"I have made some very good friends playing in the NBA.  In fact one of them is right up there, that being Chris Paul."

Last question of the night was from a kid in the audience named Mike, who said the following:

"LeBron, are you wearing that sweater because you lost a beat?"

To which LeBron and everybody else laughed...and then the night was over.

The Nike More Than A Game Tour makes 10 stops worldwide.  They are in order as follows:

Chicago, DC, Akron, Beijing, Shenyang, Shanghai, Paris, London, NYC, LA

Shaq Loses In Hilarious Fashion

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

I said on Monday that the premiere episode of Shaq Vs. - pitting Cleveland's own Shaquille O'Neal vs. the Pittsburgh QB that everyone in Cleveland wishes was the QB of the Browns  hates was a must win for the city.  Well, he lost, 21-14...did you really think Cleveland would beat Pittsburgh?  I digress...despite the disappointing end to the 7-on-7, the comedic value that Shaq afforded during the episode was reason enough for me to tune in during week two.  Must see TV going forward as far as I am concerned.

I know that I am late to the party with the review - I dvr'd it (is that a verb?) and watched it Wednesday - but I can offer nothing but thumbs flying high in the air in response to the viewing.  I have always thought that Shaq is the funniest and most entertaining athlete of my generation, and Tuesday's episode did nothing to dissuade me from that point.  The press conference was hilarious when Shaq said 'you obviously brought all those bodyguards because your terrified of me,' and the part where he said he stole Rothlisberger's jersey was too.  He didn't look as bad as one might have thought out there on the field, and it was good as a Cavs fan to hear him say that he is in this deal to win one more championship.

Additionally, I think Shaq might be doing this whole thing to get himself in the best shape he has been in the last 10 years.  During the show, I couldn't help but think that the traditional training for an NBA season just might have gotten to be too boring to him after a decade and a half plus of doing it, and he just might have gone down this reality show path as a way to re-energize his training regiment.  I don't know though, maybe he just likes the attention, but nevertheless, the show is a hit, and I'm watching next time.

Newest Cav Forward: Rob Kurz

Written by Brendan Bowers on .

As we mentioned Sunday, the Cavaliers have come to terms with free agent forward Rob Kurz, well, sort-of.  Brian Windhorst
reported that the "Cavs have agreed to a non-guaranteed contract with free agent forward Rob Kurz, a 6-9 shooting specialist, worth $736,000."  But while the Cavs won't offer the guaruntee, I will:  Kurz makes the roster.  Why? Read on and I'll tell you.

act_rob_kurz

Rob Kurz is a forward that can step out and hit the three with consistency, give effort on defense, and rebound a little bit too.  He only averaged 11 minutes per game in the 40 games he did appear last season, but in that time he made the most of it.  He connected on 15 of the 38  three pointers he attempted (40%), and came up big in the two games he played extended minutes.  He played over 30 minutes in a game only two times last season, but in those games he scored 20 points at Denver in 33 minutes, and  21 points at Utah in 38 minutes.  Does this mean he will be a star?  No chance.  But could it mean that he could one day develop into a solid 8th or 9th man for this team? Sure, why not?
